Recently, there has been a rising trend of cybersecurity issue that started with the claims made by the Chinese Communist Party. The CCP is accusing continuous cyberattacks on DeepSeek, a China-based start up, as being carried out by American hackers. Reports by China’s state broadcaster CCTV indicate that the attacks on DeepSeek’s servers have increased and that the investigation has established that the activities were initiated from IP addresses based in the United States, as reported by Interesting Engineering.

OpenAI’s Data Breach Allegations

These developments come as tensions in cyberspace rise following the serious claims made by OpenAI and Microsoft that DeepSeek illegally obtained proprietary data from its language model, ChatGPT. They claim that the latter used this data to create its own AI models, DeepSeek R1 and V3, which it has launched recently and which has received a lot of attention and users. Many accounts being that DeepSeek is comparable (if not superior) at a significantly lower cost.

  • OpenAI and Microsoft’s Concerns: The two companies feedback that DeepSeek has illegally collected data from them and this is against their intellectual property rights.
  • Evidence Provided: According to Microsoft, its security team has gathered evidence that points to misconduct by people affiliated with DeepSeek.

The Cyberattack: Analyzed

The attacks on DeepSeek’s servers were quite extensive and occurred in stages, with a DDoS attack being launched first, and then several brute-force attempts were made. These coordinated assaults have been sustained since January.

  • DDoS Attack: This method flooded DeepSeek’s servers and made them not accessible to the general population for some time.
  • Brute-Force Attempts: Hackers continue to try and access the site illegally through the process of guessing different passwords.

Possible Reasons Why Cyberattacks May Have Been Launched.

  1. Economic Espionage:
    • Technological Progress: Thus, the attackers may attempt to paralyse a rival company, DeepSeek, and its development and marketing strategies.
  2. Retaliatory Action:
    • International Tensions: As for OpenAI, these cyberattacks may be considered as counterattacks in the context of the conflict of interests over intellectual property rights.
  3. Strategic Pressure:
    • Weakening Rivals: The attackers may have a plan to put pressure on the Chinese technological companies by attacking their infrastructure and business.

Significance of the Accusations and Cyberattacks.

  • Enhanced Security Posture: Thus, companies worldwide may step up their guard, and thus, protect their data and servers better.
  • Strain on International Relations: Assigning these cyberattacks to American hackers may further escalate the conflict between China and the United States.
  • Technological Advancement Delays: If such an incursion is established, it may slow down the rate at which DeepSeek can innovate and develop its models and products.

The claims and effects of these cyberattacks are complex and demonstrate the complex relationship between technology, economy, and international relations in the contemporary world. Both companies and countries must work to understand these challenges so that they can maintain their position and promote the development of technology.

The irony in all of this is that OpenAI faces accusations of infringement and a fistful of its own lawsuits in regards to how its models were trained.  It would be interesting to see how these arguments come into play as this discourse unfolds.
