President Donald Trump announced Saturday that the United States will impose 30% tariffs on imports from the European Union and Mexico beginning August 1, according to NPR, marking a significant escalation in his administration’s global trade policies.

Trump revealed the new rates in letters to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum posted on Truth Social. According to CNN, in his letter to the EU, Trump wrote: “We have had years to discuss our Trading Relationship with The European Union, and we have concluded we must move away from these long-term, large, and persistent, Trade Deficits, engendered by your Tariff, and Non-Tariff, Policies, and Trade Barriers.”

The announcement sent ripples through global markets as economists warned of potential economic disruption. According to The Washington Post, importers and foreign manufacturers have each swallowed about 40 percent of the tariffs’ costs while consumers have paid 20 percent in the form of higher prices, citing Goldman Sachs economists.

European Commission President von der Leyen responded diplomatically but firmly. As reported by NPR, von der Leyen said in a statement that the EU remains “ready to continue working towards an agreement” by the August 1 deadline. But, she said, a 30% tariff on EU exports would hurt supply chains, businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Mexico’s response was measured despite the pressure. According to The Washington Post, Mexico noted that it has been in active discussions with the U.S. The Mexican government told U.S. officials it considered the decision “unfair treatment,” as reported by the Associated Press.

Texas Flood Visit Amid FEMA Questions

On Friday, Trump visited Kerrville, Texas, to survey damage from catastrophic flooding that killed at least 121 people, according to CBS News. The president met with families of victims and praised local officials’ response, despite mounting questions about warning systems.

When a reporter asked about families upset that alerts didn’t go out in time, Trump responded sharply. According to ABC News, Trump said, “I don’t know who you are, but only a very evil person would ask a question like that,” before praising the emergency response.

PBS News reported that Trump said the federal government will continue to support Texas with whatever it needs. “The billions of dollars that this country gives away for things that they shouldn’t be doing, and this is not billions of dollars,” he said in a Fox News interview as he was departing the state.

The visit came amid ongoing questions about the future of FEMA, which Trump has previously threatened to eliminate. According to CNN’s live coverage, The White House has softened its messaging on the Federal Emergency Management Agency after Trump declared last month that he plans to phase it out, with Trump saying today that he has “good people” running the agency.

Threats Against NYC Mayoral Candidate

Trump escalated his rhetoric against New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, threatening federal intervention if the self-described democratic socialist wins November’s election. According to The Washington Post, during a visit to a Florida migrant detention center, Trump said he’d have him arrested if he blocks Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in New York. “Well, then we’ll have to arrest him,” Trump said.

CNN analysis reported that during a Cabinet meeting this week, Trump issued a provocative threat: If New York City elects a “communist” mayor, he might take the city over, just like he might take over Washington, DC. “We have tremendous power at the White House to run places when we have to,” he said.

Mamdani, who is not a communist but a democratic socialist, responded forcefully. According to TIME, Mamdani denounced President Donald Trump’s threat to arrest him over his pledge to push back on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, calling the President’s comments “an attack on our democracy” and “intimidation.”

One Year After Butler

Saturday marks one year since the assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. According to the U.S. Secret Service’s official statement, Director Sean Curran said: “My heart will always be with all those impacted on that day, especially Corey Comperatore, who lost his life while protecting those around him.”

Friends and allies report changes in Trump since the attempt. According to U.S. News, Roger Stone, a longtime friend and informal adviser, noted that Trump has had other brushes with death… Stone said he’s found the president “to be more serene and more determined after the attempt on his life” in Butler.

Italy’s Balancing Act

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emerged as a key figure attempting to mediate between the U.S. and EU on trade issues. According to the Associated Press, Meloni on Tuesday called for “pragmatism” to prevent an EU-US dispute over tariffs from escalating into a full-scale trade war.

The Italian government’s official statement, as reported by NPR, said “We trust in the goodwill of all stakeholders to reach a fair agreement that can strengthen the West as a whole, given that—particularly in the current scenario—it would make no sense to trigger a trade war between the two sides of the Atlantic.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated some flexibility in negotiations. According to CNN, Bessent posted on X that the United Kingdom “smartly secured an early deal.”

The tariff announcements cap a week of trade policy volatility. As NBC News reported, Trump has spent the past week bringing his trade war back to a roaring boil. He kicked it off by issuing dozens of letters announcing unilateral tariffs.
