China Launches First Commercial Neutral-Atom Quantum Computer With $5.6 Million in Orders

China has achieved a commercial milestone in quantum computing with the launch of Hanyuan-1, the country’s first atomic quantum computer to enter the marketplace, according to reporting from the South China Morning Post and other outlets citing Hubei Daily, the official newspaper of Hubei Province.

The system, which the South China Morning Post reported on November 2, 2025, has secured more than 40 million yuan (approximately $5.6 million) in orders, including deliveries to both domestic and international customers. The South China Morning Post reported that the first commercial unit was delivered to a subsidiary of telecommunications provider China Mobile, while Pakistan also placed an order.

The Hanyuan-1 was described by Hubei Daily, per the South China Morning Post’s reporting, as one of the few machines in the emerging field of atomic quantum computing to achieve mass production and delivery worldwide.

Technical Specifications

The Quantum Computing Report, citing Hubei Daily, reported that the Hanyuan-1 system features 100 qubits with a measured single-qubit gate fidelity of 0.999 and a two-qubit gate fidelity of 0.98. These specifications meet benchmark levels for commercial-grade neutral atom quantum computers, according to the Quantum Computing Report.

Unlike superconducting quantum systems that require temperatures approaching absolute zero, the Hanyuan-1 uses neutral atoms as qubits, controlled by lasers. The Quantum Insider reported, based on Hubei Daily, that the entire system fits within three standard equipment racks and operates at room temperature. The Quantum Computing Report stated that maintenance difficulty and energy consumption are reduced by more than 90% compared to superconducting quantum computers.

The South China Morning Post reported that the machine can be used for complex calculations such as financial modeling and logistics optimization.

Domestic Supply Chain Development

Development of the system was led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology in Wuhan, according to the South China Morning Post. The Quantum Computing Report noted that Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology also contributed to the project, which received support from the Hubei Provincial Department of Science and Technology.

The Quantum Computing Report stated that the project team successfully achieved localization of core components by building a complete research and development system from chip growth to packaging and testing. This effort overcame previous bottlenecks related to components like narrow-linewidth high-power lasers, which the Quantum Computing Report noted are included on U.S. export control lists.

The Quantum Insider, citing Hubei Daily, reported that engineers produced high-performance lasers that consume only one-tenth the energy of comparable foreign systems.

Cloud Platform and Future Expansion

The Quantum Computing Report reported that the project team developed an Atomic Quantum Computing Cloud Platform intended to provide integrated services for visualized algorithm design and hardware optimization. According to the Quantum Computing Report, the platform is currently integrated with more than 50 universities and enterprises.

The Quantum Computing Report stated that the team is establishing China’s first atomic quantum computing center in Hubei, which will feature a multi-machine cluster system to provide continuous computing power services. The center will focus on computationally demanding problems such as financial risk analysis and industrial partial differential equation solving, with a goal of providing large-scale atomic computing power services by 2027, according to the Quantum Computing Report.

China-Pakistan Quantum Cooperation

The export order to Pakistan follows a broader bilateral agreement between the two countries. The Quantum Insider reported on October 27, 2025, citing Business Recorder, that Pakistan’s Emerging Technologies Lab and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding to promote cooperation in quantum technologies. According to the Quantum Insider’s reporting, the agreement includes plans for China Electronics Technology Group Corporation to help establish Pakistan’s National Centre for Quantum Computing.

Arab News reported that the cooperation is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, with the second phase of the corridor centered on industrial cooperation, technology transfer, and skills development.

Global Context

PostQuantum.com, in a November 2025 analysis, noted that the Hanyuan-1 launch comes shortly after China opened access to a 105-qubit superconducting quantum computer, the Zuchongzhi 3.0 chip, via a cloud platform in late October 2025. PostQuantum.com observed that together, these developments indicate China is advancing on multiple quantum technology fronts simultaneously.

While the system operates on a smaller scale than some machines being developed by global competitors, the Quantum Insider reported that Chinese researchers view the device as an early step toward scalable quantum computing that can support real-world problem solving.
