In 2009, Amazon launched it’s AmazonBasics line, according to a press release from the retailer. “We saw an opportunity to create a line of consumer electronics basics that combine quality and low prices for an overall focus on value,” said Paul Ryder, vice president of Consumer Electronics for Amazon.com. However, it seems the value on these products has lead to a less than quality product. Since 2016, more than 1500 reviews of AmazonBasics products, have complained of the items creating many hazardous occurences such as smoking, exploding, causing electrical malfunctions, and melting to name a few, according to an investigation launched by CNN.
Though these reviews only represent a small percentage of purchases, consumers have raised major concern through their complaints to government regulators and in the reviews posted to Amazon’s website. (CNN)
