  • Lakers finished 50-32 as Western Conference 3rd seed before first-round playoff exit

The Dallas Mavericks have made their position clear regarding a potential trade for Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, refusing to part with significant roster pieces to acquire the four-time NBA champion.

According to Dan Woike and Joe Vardon of The Athletic on July 16, the Mavericks are not interested in dismantling their current roster to match James’ substantial salary. “One team linked to James — the Dallas Mavericks — does not have interest in gutting its roster to match James’ salary in a trade, a team source told The Athletic,” Woike and Vardon reported.

The veteran forward, who ESPN reported on June 29 is exercising his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, would require significant salary matching in any potential trade. The Athletic also noted that James possesses a full no-trade clause in his contract, giving him complete control over any potential destination.

Trade speculation intensified following a statement from James’ agent Rich Paul to ESPN’s Shams Charania on June 29. “LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul told Charania. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.”

Paul’s statement to ESPN also emphasized the delicate balance the Lakers face: “We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career.”

The Lakers completed the 2024-25 regular season with a 50-32 record, securing the Western Conference’s third seed, according to Basketball-Reference.com. However, the season ended with a first-round playoff exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games, as Wikipedia’s 2025 NBA playoffs entry documented.

In response to the playoff disappointment, The Sporting Tribune reported on July 8 that the Lakers signed center Deandre Ayton to a two-year, $16.6 million deal with a player option for 2026-27. The team also added forward Jake LaRavia to provide additional depth, the publication noted.

Silver Screen and Roll reported on July 17 that for the Mavericks to match James’ salary in a potential trade, they would need to include multiple core players. The publication cited an example requiring “Klay Thompson, Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington and Max Christie” to make the financial aspects work.

ESPN reported on July 11 that the Lakers’ approach signals a transition toward building around Luka Doncic, who was acquired from Dallas earlier in 2025. The report suggested this shift in focus contributed to the uncertainty surrounding James’ future with the franchise.

The Athletic’s reporting emphasized that no discussions about a buyout have occurred between the Lakers and James, despite ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reporting on July 3 that Dallas would only be interested in James “in a buyout situation.”

At 40 years old, James remains one of the league’s elite players despite being the NBA’s oldest active participant for the past two seasons, as noted in the Yahoo Sports article. The future Hall of Famer’s next move remains uncertain as the 2025-26 season approaches.
