2. Monkey See, Monkey Do

We’re human. We sometimes can’t help becoming a product of our surroundings. A child’s mind is like a sponge, it soaks up everything it sees and hears, especially on a subconscious level. It is assumed that the first seven years of a child’s life are imperative to be mindful of developing because it’s at that mark where their consciousness and personality really starts to kick in, with possibly the parent’s undesirable habits to follow suit over the years. If growing up we watched dad tell mommy that he would clean the garage tomorrow and it’s been 15 years, we’re almost sure to put off tasks we don’t feel inclined to do either.

What to Try: First things first, if you’re a parent, stop the cycle! Be mindful of what you (and others) say and do around your child(ren). Even when you think they aren’t watching or listening, they are!

For those who just struggle with this habit themselves, find a mentor or role model with integrity, and mimic them instead! Although it is easier to develop the mind of a child, as an adult you are still capable of learning new and healthier habits too. You just have to stick with it!
